Abstract

a brief description of the Werner's Killifish.

The Werner’s killifish is a small fish native to Sri Lanka where it inhabits small, shallow, slow-flowing, heavily shaded streams and rivulets with a silt or clay substrate.

The Werner’s killifish grows to an adult size of 2.75 inches long.  Males are larger, more brightly colored, and have longer fins than females.

The Werner’s killifish should be maintained in an aquarium of 20 gallons or larger.  It will appreciate floating plants in a forest stream style set-up comprised of a soft substrate (CS7581), driftwood (ZM2001), and leaf litter (CS706).  Submerged aquatic plants may be incorporated as well.

In the aquarium, the Werner’s killifish prefers a temperature of 72°F to 79°F, a pH of 6.2 to 7.2, and a hardness of 3 to 15°H. Clean water with low nitrate levels are a must.

The Werner’s killifish can be slightly aggressive and may be kept in a community of fish too large to eat or bully.  Good tank mates include larger tetra species, peaceful barb species, dwarf cichlids, larger danio species, and smaller catfish species.  It may be aggressive to similar killifish species.

Wild Werner’s killifish feed on insects and fish fry.  In the aquarium, they should be fed a varied diet that includes small meaty foods such as live black worms, frozen blood worms (SF4792), frozen brine shrimp (SF6777), high quality flakes (AL165), and granules.  These fish will look their best and be healthier overall when given probiotics (AL169) and garlic in addition to a balanced diet.
